5v5 flag football play
Slant Rub
Crossing routes make defenders sort out traffic mid-play, and the slant behind it wins the beat they lose. Tell your players: 'This works with speed, not contact — brush by, don't bump.'
How to run it
- 1
WR3's arrow crosses in front of WR2's defender at full speed — run through the flat, never slow down or stop to shield anyone; a stationary pick is a penalty.
- 2
WR2: one hard outside step, then slant off WR3's tail — 'under first, over second' is the timing of the whole play.
- 3
QB: throw the slant on the third step, right as WR2 crosses behind the traffic — early is a collision, late lets the defender recover.
Who the quarterback reads
- 1. Z
- 2. Y
- 3. C
WR2's slant is first because the arrow crossing underneath forces her defender to hesitate or trail, opening the slant for a rhythm throw.
The concepts in this play
- Slants
- Quick routes breaking inside at a 45° angle. The fastest way to move the ball and the best answer to a hard rush.
Who should run it
Developing. Teams with a season together, or middle-school age. A couple of reps to lock the spacing in.
