5v5 flag football play
Smash Return
Smash to the left with a return route as the third answer — three windows off one defender's decision. Tell your players: 'Hitch bait, corner hook, return safety-net.'
How to run it
- 1
C: bend your corner route away from the deep help — climb to eight, then break for the left pylon angle.
- 2
WR1: hitch at five and be loud with your hands — the more the deep defender honors you, the more grass C has behind her.
- 3
QB: deep defender sits, throw C's corner; she sinks, take WR1's hitch; late in the down, WR3's return route is spinning open in the middle.
Who the quarterback reads
- 1. C
- 2. X
- 3. Y
C's corner is first because smash reads top-down — if the deep defender squats on the hitch even for a step, the corner behind her is the big win.
The concepts in this play
- Smash
- A short hitch underneath a deep corner route over the same defender. He can't cover both; the QB throws off whichever one he leaves open.
- Return
- A receiver sells one direction, then comes back to the ball (a comeback or pivot). It punishes a defender who's trailing or peeking.
Who should run it
Developing. Teams with a season together, or middle-school age. A couple of reps to lock the spacing in.
