5v5 flag football play
Smash Corner
Hitch under, corner over — the oldest two-on-one in football and a red-zone staple. Tell your players: 'Hitch girl, you're the bait; corner girl, you're the hook.'
How to run it
- 1
WR3: sell the seam for six yards, then break to the corner — aim for the spot three yards inside the pylon so the ball can lead you away from coverage.
- 2
WR2: hitch at five and SIT — your job is to be so tempting the deep defender wants to jump you.
- 3
QB: it's one defender's choice — she sits on the hitch, throw the corner; she runs with the corner, take the easy hitch and move on.
Who the quarterback reads
- 1. Y
- 2. Z
- 3. C
The corner comes first because smash is read top-down off the deep outside defender — her first move decides corner or hitch before the ball is even cocked.
The concepts in this play
- Smash
- A short hitch underneath a deep corner route over the same defender. He can't cover both; the QB throws off whichever one he leaves open.
Who should run it
Developing. Teams with a season together, or middle-school age. A couple of reps to lock the spacing in.
