Tunnel Screen
You get your best runner the ball at full speed with the middle of the field emptied for her. Tell your players: 'Clear-out routes at game speed — the screen is only as good as your acting.'
How to run it
- 1
WR1: one step back and outside to catch, then tunnel inside off the traffic — catch it behind the line with your shoulders already turned upfield.
- 2
C and WR3: sprint AWAY from the tunnel lane — in this league nobody blocks; your routes clearing out IS the screen.
- 3
QB: throw it now, low and away from the defender — this ball arrives before the defense's first step.
Who the quarterback reads
- 1. X
A tunnel screen is a now-throw to one pre-determined target — WR1 — and if the picture is wrong the QB throws it into the ground at her feet, not to a second read.
The concepts in this play
- Screens
- The QB throws behind the line to a receiver with blockers already in front — it turns a pass rush into open running room.
- Quick game
- Three-step routes thrown on rhythm. The ball is out of the QB's hand before the rush can arrive — great for a young line.
Who should run it
Developing. Teams with a season together, or middle-school age. A couple of reps to lock the spacing in.
